Tutoring for children

Tutoring students requires more than just an understanding of a subject. A good tutor also has a love the subject or subjects which they teach. It also does not take a professional teacher to be a tutor; in fact many universities employ students as tutors to assist each other. Student tutors are those who have done well in a course in the past and possess an excellent understanding of the subject matter.

Simply understanding a subject does not mean that one will be a sufficient tutor, it is also important to understand which aspects of a subject other may students may have difficulty grasping. If other students understand the material when they are learning from the tutor but cannot replicate that comprehension when tutoring has ended, then the sessions may not be effective.

If the tutor is enthusiastic about the subject the student will also be more likely to be excited and get a better understanding of it, even if it is a subject they previously thought was impossible. Tutors should provide their students with the tools they need to continue studying after tutoring hours are over. This may mean making notes before sessions and sending the student home with them, or suggesting educational technologies which they can use for further study. If the class being studied uses a great deal of educational technology, a good idea may be to sit down with the student and ensure that they understand how to use it. Also make time during the sessions to show the student how they can make the most out of their technology resources.

If the tutor is wholehearted about the course content the student will look forward to study time. Tutoring should not seem like a chore to the student. Even take some time to get to know the student, ask them about their educational goals. If they are a high school student ask them about plans they have for future learning. Ask if they plan to study this subject or similar subjects in college. If the student is in grade school ask them about what types of classes they hope take in high school. A student that is comfortable with their tutor will be more forthcoming with difficulties they have, and more likely to let the tutor assist them with strategies to overcome their hardships. In due time tutors should see their students begin to improve in their subject of study and even at excel in the subject.
