Although we have provided a few of our goofy ideas below, we also encourage you to visit our fun and expansive resources we compiled below.  They are helpful and provide a ton of ideas to keep this summer affordable for you and your family.

We put this together in hopes that you will find something extra that you may not have thought of that doesn’t cost money.  Have a wonderful summer.

Scavenger Hunt: Organize a scavenger hunt using items you no longer use around the house.  Hide the items in safe locations around your yard, neighborhood, school or at the park.  Write up fun clues that lead children from item to item.  (if you have a lot of children playing, find a multiples of the same item and create teams so each team can collect the item.)  The winner can have a prize of something you find around the house or a treat made with ingredients you already have.  This is a fun way to get kids working together and using teamwork to find the clue.

Organize a recycling party:  This is great fun depending on where you live but you can if you can find items around the house and recycle them or take them to a shelter or thrift store.  You can teach kids the importance of recycling and giving back to those in need.  This one is also great for cans and bottles where you can return them for money, children get a rewarding lesson too.  Put the money towards an activity or donate it to a local charity or food bank.

Have a neighborhood potluck: with family and children in your area.  This is a great way to get to know your neighbors better and feed the kids.  Ask for email addresses and use online tools such as e-vite or facebook to see who can attend the event and what they might bring.  This will eliminates back and forth and gives others a chance to see whats everyone is bringing. Make a rule, make something with what you already have.  This makes for an interesting menu. Turn this into an all day event by creating games, contests and surprises to keep the kids entertained for hours.  Getting to know your neighbors is important and this is a wonderful way to break the ice and have fun with the kids at the same time.

Sprinkler Fun: On a hot day get the sprinkler out and and play games like Frisbee, hula hoop, soccer, yard golf or just about anything that is waterproof.  This is a to get children away from the TV.  If you have an air mattress, inflate it and put it under the sprinkler for another element of fun.

Group Walk: Plan a walk around the neighborhood or local park with other kids.  This is a good way to get in some exercise after dinner.  Invite, friends, family and neighbors.  Setup a time to do it every week.  Walking is a great way to encourage healthy habits and you can make it a fun for whole family.

Help Someone in Need: Help someone in the neighborhood in need.  If you live near someone elderly or maybe has a physical disability, offer to do chores or help clean up, you could even do some light landscaping to help out.  This is something the whole family or neighborhood can participate in.  This is a great way to make a positive impact on the person and the community.

Imagination at work

How do we as parents instill the importance and discipline in our children?  There are many key factors to this success.  To start off, keep in close contact with your child’s teacher.  Many schools these days allow you to have email access to their teacher.  You can check on your child’s progress, keep up on what they are learning and know what homework assignments are given.  Being an involved parent is essential to your child’s success.

Sitting down with your child and having a one-on-one conversation is also important.  Let your child know that you care and are interested in what they are learning in school and that you are there to help them succeed.  They also need to be aware of your expectations for them to do well in school and the circumstances they may face now and down the road if they don’t try their best.  It is also a good idea to create a homework schedule with them. 

Lastly, provide your child with the proper tools.  Create a homework area in your home that is comfortable, has good lighting, and is free from distractions.  Having their own desk and supplies at home, will keep them organized and focused.  Depending on your child’s age and space available, there are many options on a proper desk.  It is never too early or too late to create this homework space.  For the younger children, the Preschool Desk or Avalon Desk with Hutch is a great option.  These desks were created and designed for small children.  For an older child, the Kool Kolors desks are a wonderful choice.  They come in several different colors to match any child’s room and have a sleek design.

Its amazing to watch your child play peacefully in the sand and watch their imagination go wild.  They can entertain themselves for hours on end.  This type of play does not requires batteries or instructions, its just pure fun.  Not only is a sandbox good for solo play, but it is also a wonderful way for them to play with other children.  By sharing the sandbox, buckets and shovels, this will help your child learn how to socialize and work well with others.

There are many types of sandboxes out there to choose from.  The Big Top Sandbox or the Pirate Sandbox are both large enough, that multiple children can play at once.  There are storage bins under the seats that can store all of their buckets, shovels, and toys.  They both also have canopies that provides 50+ UV protection.

It is very important to keep the sandbox clean for your child.  When you first buy sand for the sandbox, it is best to purchase sterilized play sand.   This ensures that the sand is free of germs, animal droppings and mold.  The key to keeping it clean is to keep it covered when not in use.  This will provide protection from moisture, leaves, and will also keep any animals out of it.  If moisture happens to get in, it will harbor bacteria if nothing is done.  You will need to periodically turn the sand to help dry it out.  After the kids are done playing, use a rake to go through the sand.  You will be amazed to find buried toys or debris that got in while they were playing.  It is also a good idea to tell your child that food or juices are not allowed in the sandbox.  Lastly, the sand should be replaced every two years.

Having a sandbox is just one of many ways to create a “fun zone” in your backyard for endless hours of fun and wonderful memories are made.

 It is important to make this fun. One great way to teach them how to pick up after themselves is by turning it into a game. You can get a stop watch out and tell your child, “Lets see how fast you can pick up your cars!” When they are done picking up their cars, tell them their time and praise them on how fast they did it. Keep that up until all of their toys are put away. Another fun way is to play a special song or make up a song that you and your child can sing together while they are picking up their toys.

 Having a proper toy storage solution is also key to organization and teaching your child to put away their toys. Are you looking to organize a small bedroom or a large playroom or daycare?
